An axe or ax is a chopping or cutting tool that has been used by humans since the Stone Age. The first axes were, not surprisingly, made from sharpened blocks of stone. Later, wooden handles were added and the blades were made from copper, bronze, or iron.

Throughout history, battle-axes especially have often had religious or social significance. Axes were variously believed to ward off lightning, protect crops from bad weather, keep away witches, and ensure the birth of a son.

In Europe, North America, and China, battle axes, tomahawks, and other axe-like weapons were used in warfare. Today, this skill has evolved into the sport of axe throwing. Axes are often a common part of the toolset of firemen, ice climbers, home gardeners, and others.

1. Begin by drawing the eye of the axe, the top of the handle that protrudes through the top of the axe blade. Use a curved line to enclose an irregular rounded shape.

2. Draw curved lines on each side of the eye to form a sort of backward "C" shape. This outlines the poll or butt of the axe head - the rear portion that the handle passes through.

3. Draw a long and short straight line across the axe head, then draw a long curved line protruding from each end. This outlines the top of the cheek - the side of the blade - and the curved beard of the axe head, the bottom portion of the axe head near the handle.

6. Erase portions of the bit and replace them with curved or "U" shaped lines. This indicates damage through use. Draw a long curved line across the cheek, indicating the inner edge of the bit.

7. Extend a long curved line opposite the eye, and double it back upon itself to form the handle. Notice that it gets a bit wider toward the bottom. This is called the knob, and it prevents the axe from slipping out of the hand of the user.
